Charlie Dalin, skipper of MACIF Santé Prévoyance, who is the leader of the Vendée Globe crossed the equator back into the Northern Hemisphere this Sunday afternoon at 1438 hours UTC. His elapsed time since the start is 56 days, 2 hours, 36 minutes and 23 seconds.
His time between Cape Horn and the equator is therefore 12 days, 15 hours, 1 minute and 33 seconds and so he only just misses the best ever time from the Horn to the Equator which was set by Germany’s Boris Herrmann, (Malizia Seaexplorer), on his climb back up the Atlantic in the 2020-2021 race at 11 days and 18 hours. Dalin has led at various key stages, Cape of Good Hope (November 29), Cape Leeuwin (December 9), Point Nemo (December 20) and now, today, the Equator.
In terms of the constant head-to-head match with Yoann Richomme (PAPREC Arkea), Dalin has led at these key stages but Richomme led across Cape Horn by 9 minutes and 31 seconds back on 23rd December.
More than 7,700 miles (14,200 km) separates the leader Charlie Dalin, (MACIF Santé Prévoyance), from the 35th placed Denis Van Weynbergh, (D’Ieteren Group). Dalin was 123 miles ahead of Richomme when he crossed back into his ‘home’ hemisphere.
Boris teilt mit:
“Once I finished my manoeuvre this morning, I looked up and switched the backstay from the jib to the code zero, which is at the top of the mast. The backstay also has to pull on the top of the mast, and this is adjusted with a rope that pulls sideways. When I looked at it, I saw the rope had broken, or at least the cover was damaged. So, either today or tomorrow, when the sea state allows, I’ll go up to try to patch it up with tape and some stitching to secure it a bit. You know, I’m afraid of heights, so I’ll need some time to mentally prepare for that.”

Boris has had a busy day onboard Malizia-Seaexplorer! A minor mishap with a sail bag left his eye a little sore (don’t worry, he’s fine!), and a brisk natural wake-up call on deck added a bit of excitement to his morning. Despite the challenges, morale remains strong as the race continues. Ahead lies the tricky zone around Rio, with everything from light winds to thunderstorms, and add to that even oil rigs to navigate. On top of this, Boris is preparing for a mast climb to make a repair – no small challenge for someone with a fear of heights! And before anyone asks, no the deck camera was not on this morning!
